Status of Language Teachers & Programs (2003-2005)
In February 2003, CASLT was invited to represent Canada at an international four-day Think Tank Forum with the focus on the status of language teachers at the ECML, in Graz, Austria. CASLT built on these ideas and began a project to bring visibility to the issues in the area of Core French and its teaching, including mobility, recruitment, and retention of second language teachers, assessing the current working climate of Core French teachers and the value placed on their programs as well as the variety of delivery models, resources and support mechanisms available.
This current proposal focused on initial information gathering and needs assessment through facilitated working sessions, telephone focus groups, and questionnaires. Subsequent to this, the Association will undertake follow-up plans in the areas that will provide the greatest results. The status-raising activities were undertaken in conjunction with the CASLT Chez Vous initiative. Communication with educational partners, formation of a network between the provinces and territories, and advocacy with administrators and decision-makers were all initiated.
