Overview of Activity
The students will purchase items at the IGA cyber-market. They will buy the necessary food to prepare a meal for 2 persons. Food must be purchased from the four food groups.
Learning Outcomes / Technical Skills
The students will be required to:
- use vocabulary about food from the four food groups;
- write a short paragraph;
- visit a web site;
- print a text.
Learning Scenario
IGA has a website that the students will visit. Students will visit the various departments of the IGA cybermarket and select a list of items for a meal. They click on the images to visit each department. They have $20.00 to spend. After the visit, the students make up a provisions list, including prices and the total cost. They will also write a brief description of their meal.
Extension Activities
Organize a field trip to your local grocery store. Divide students into small groups each responsible for investigating a certain agri-food topic (how foods are organized within the store, interview employees about their roles, etc).
Assessment Strategies
Questions to help direct teacher observations:
- Is there food from the four food groups included in the meal?
- Does the meal cost less than $20.00?
- Is the menu well written?
A self-evaluation form is available at the end of the Student Page. It may be completed in one of two ways: you may discuss these questions orally with your students or if you prefer, your students can write out their answers to the self evaluation questions.
