Johanne Cloutier:French Second Language educator for more than 30 years. She started her career as a Second Language teacher(core, extended and immerson) then became a consultant in the primary and junior divisions for 12 years.
In the past five years, she was an elementary school principal for the OCCSB. Johanne has provided numerous professional growth opportunities through course for FSL teachers at Ottawa University as well as workshops and conferences across Ontario and Canada. She was a project leader for a Boardwide mentoring and peer coaching project. Other professional experience include: past president of OMLTA, co-authored the Ontario Provincial Standards for language as well as many other curriculum units. Panel member of a TVO forum on the importance of languges in the future.

Theresa Pugliese: Has been involved in Second Language Teaching for over thirty years. Her experiences include teaching core, extended and immersion French at the primary, junior and intermediate levels. She then became an FSL consultant in the elementary panels. In addition to providing curriculum inservice, she assisted teachers in the areas of planning, classroom management, discipline, motivation, cooperative learning assessment and evaluation. She has been a school administrator and educational leader for the past 10 years and has also enjoyed teaching the additional qualifications courses. Theresa has been an active member of many professional development associations and is truly an advocate for Second Language Learning. She has co-authored a reading program as well as a resource kit for the National Capital Commission. She has also participated in many writing projects And presented workshops at conferences across the country.

Title of Workshop/Presentation: Leadership professional development modules for Second Language teachers.

Language of Delivery: French or English

Target Audience: Second Language Teachers and teachers in positions of responsibility.

Session Description: Teachers must continue to refine and enhance their professional skills in order to maximize success for all language learners. The main purpose is to provide opportunities for Second Language teachers to become involved in an active way in their own professional development and enhance their leadership skills.They will observe innovative teaching methods, practice the techniques , and obtain feedback and reinforcement. They will mentored throughout the process and in turn mentor colleagues.

Available modules are:

1-Leadership- the process of change
2-Leadership - the planning process
3-Leadership- innovative strategies
4. Leadership and evaluation

The workshop format will be based on the follow model using Adult Learning strategies including authentic problem solving and mentoring. The two workshop leaders will model and guide participants thought each step of the process described below.

• Awareness of the Change Process
• Gap analysis between current practice and target practice
• Develop of a self-directed professional development plan
• Acquisition of knowledge in selected content area.
• Demonstration of best practices (visit, video, discussion, expert, etc..)
• Practice of new skill
• Feedback
• Reflection and assessment

Preferred Length of Time: Each module is 3 hours in length –The series of 4 workshop provides a comprehensive and sequential approach . However, each module can be selected as a single workshop.

Target Audience: Principals and Vice-Principals

Session Description: The workshop is designed to provide school administrators with practical tools to enhance the delivery of Second Language Programs in their schools.

The content for this workshop will include the following topics:

  • The state of French Second Language Education- Models and Research
  • Assessing the needs of your school
  • Supporting and mentoring Second Language Teachers
  • Responding to parents' questions and concerns

Preferred Length of Time: 2 – 3 hours

Strand Identifying Keywords: Assessment/Evaluation, Methods / Techniques, Professional Development , Second Language Theory, Research, Mentoring, Advocacy Issues.
