Miles Turnbull is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Prince Edward Island. He is director of a new pre-service program in French second language teaching, with a special focus on teaching French immersion (see www.upei.ca/education), and also in the graduate program in leadership and learning. Before joining the faculty of UPEI, Miles was an Assistant Professor in the Modern Language Centre at OISE-UT and he worked in core and immersion French programs in three Canadian Provinces. His research interests include French as a second language (core and immersion), teacher development, teacher belief systems, project-based and experiential learning, as well as educational technology.

Title of Workshop/Presentation: Engager, motiver et responsabiliser vos élèves dans une pédagogie du projet: Mettre l’enseignement de la grammaire en perspective Language of Delivery: français Target Audience: Immersion, francais de base, intermédiaire et secondaire Session Description: Cet atelier sera pratique, interactif et collaboratif! Dans un premier temps, je partagerai une technique pour l’enseignement de la grammaire, dans une optique communicative et expérientielle qui comprend un projet final, qui engage les élèves et les rend responsables de leur propre apprentissage grammatical. Dans un deuxième temps, nous travaillerons ensemble pour adapter cette technique pratique aux contextes d’enseignement des participant(e)s. Considering an experiential-discovery model for teaching grammar in L2 classes Language of Delivery: English Target Audience: intermediate-secondary levels, all languages Session Description: In this interactive session, we will first discuss an experiential-discovery model for teaching grammar in L2 classes. The presenter will engage the audience in a discussion of the “theory and research” behind this model. Next, we will “experience and critique” a sample lesson in English and explore how we might apply the model to our different teaching contexts. Title of Workshop/Presentation: Le français ou l'anglais en français de base? Language of Delivery: français Target Audience: francais de base, all levels Session Description: Dans un premier temps, nous examinerons pourquoi les enseignant(e)s en immersion et en français de base devraient maximiser leur emploi du français en classe. Nous nous poserons également la question suivante: Y a-t-il un rôle pour l’anglais dans l’enseignement du français? Dans un deuxième temps, le conférencier présentera une leçon “modèle” afin de partager des trucs pratiques visant à maximiser l’emploi du français et à limiter et à rentabiliser l’emploi de l’anglais. Title of Workshop/Presentation: Using the students' first and second languages in your second language classes exploring this complex challenge Language of Delivery: English Target Audience: All levels, all second or foreign languages Session Description: Part 1 of this interactive session will review theoretical and empirical evidence for using the first and target languages in teaching second and foreign languages. Part 2 will include a "model" lesson and practical tips to help second or foreign language teachers maximize their use of the target language and effectively use English.
