Why FSL Fundamentals?
FSL Fundamentals strives to address the challenges faced by French as a second language (FSL)* teachers in Canada. Our goal is to equip FSL educators with essential skills, boost their confidence, and foster a supportive community.
Recent studies have revealed a significant shortage of FSL teachers in Canada, with projections indicating a lack of up to 10,000 FSL teachers. Many non-FSL educators are stepping into roles for which they may not have been fully prepared. FSL Fundamentals addresses FSL teachers’ critical need for foundational skills in:
- Pedagogical Knowledge: Understanding effective teaching strategies for language education.
- French Language Proficiency: Enhancing your ability to communicate and teach in French.
- Community Support: Connecting with other educators to share experiences and resources.
*For CASLT, “FSL” encompasses all primary and secondary educational programs in Canada where French is taught to students whose first language is not French. This includes, but is not limited to, French Immersion (both early and late immersion), Core French, Extended French, Intensive French, and French as an additional language.
FSL Fundamentals tackles these issues head-on through two key offerings:
- Asynchronous Online Courses: Accessible anytime, these courses in the CASLT CoLab help you build your skills at your own pace.
- Instructor-Led Online Courses: These live, interactive sessions focus on practical FSL teaching methods and improving French language proficiency.
Through FSL Fundamentals, participants will gain essential knowledge and develop the confidence they need to thrive in their teaching roles. The courses are designed to empower educators with practical skills and resources that will make a real difference in their classrooms. Whether you’re new to teaching French or looking to strengthen your foundational skills, FSL Fundamentals is here to support you on your journey!
