FSL Fundamentals

Building a Strong Foundation for FSL Educators

FSL Fundamentals strives to address the challenges faced by French as a second language (FSL)* teachers in Canada. Our goal is to equip FSL educators with essential skills, boost their confidence, and foster a supportive community.

Recent studies have revealed a significant shortage of FSL teachers in Canada, with projections indicating a lack of up to 10,000 FSL teachers. Many non-FSL educators are stepping into roles for which they may not have been fully prepared. FSL Fundamentals addresses FSL teachers’ critical need for foundational skills in:

  • Pedagogical Knowledge: Understanding effective teaching strategies for language education.
  • French Language Proficiency: Enhancing your ability to communicate and teach in French.
  • Community Support: Connecting with other educators to share experiences and resources.

*For CASLT, “FSL” encompasses all primary and secondary educational programs in Canada where French is taught to students whose first language is not French. This includes, but is not limited to, French Immersion (both early and late immersion), Core French, Extended French, Intensive French, and French as an additional language.

FSL Fundamentals tackles these issues head-on through two key offerings:

  • Asynchronous Online Courses: Accessible anytime, these courses in the CASLT CoLab help you build your skills at your own pace.
  • Instructor-Led Online Courses: These live, interactive sessions focus on practical FSL teaching methods and improving French language proficiency.

Through FSL Fundamentals, participants will gain essential knowledge and develop the confidence they need to thrive in their teaching roles. The courses are designed to empower educators with practical skills and resources that will make a real difference in their classrooms. Whether you’re new to teaching French or looking to strengthen your foundational skills, FSL Fundamentals is here to support you on your journey!

Instructor-Led Online Courses

Our instructor-led courses offer interactive learning experiences where educators can connect with peers and instructors in real time. These multi-week sessions focus on practical FSL pedagogy and French language proficiency, providing opportunities to ask questions, share insights, and collaborate on best practices. In this course, participants will explore strategies and considerations for effective resource selection and creation in FSL programs.

FSL Teaching Approaches and Strategies

In this course, we will explore different approaches and strategies for teaching French. We will share examples of what works (and what doesn’t!) and discuss the research and experiences that inform our teaching practices.

Effective Assessment Strategies for FSL

In this course, participants will learn practical and time-saving strategies—including assessment frameworks, triangulation of evidence, differentiation, inclusion, curriculum alignment, reporting, workflow, and international language credentials—for designing and implementing authentic and engaging assessments to evaluate student language proficiency in a classroom with diverse needs.
 

Event

Fostering Equity and Diversity in the FSL Classroom

This course provides a supportive environment for FSL educators to understand social justice issues, learn strategies for creating inclusive classrooms, address systemic barriers, and implement diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles in their practice.
