The Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers (CASLT) is pleased to learn that the Government of New Brunswick has reversed course and will retain its French Immersion (FI) program. This decision will benefit French as a second language (FSL) learners and FSL education as a whole in the province.
Since New Brunswick announced its intention to abandon FI, CASLT has participated in various public consultations to reiterate its support for the program and advocate for its maintenance. FI has a proven track record of developing Canadians’ French-language proficiency and is a crucial program in the FSL education landscape.
CASLT applauds the Government of New Brunswick’s acknowledgement that seeking ways to improve FI instead of eliminating it is the best course of action. We reiterate our willingness to offer guidance and support to the province as it looks to strengthen its FSL program offerings.
